From early records we also find evidence of the great esteem given to specific resins, herbs and spices - renowned for their fragrant and healing properties - which were used in the concoctions of the apothecaries and original aromatherapists. 'Pure myrrh, sweet cinnamon, sweet calamus, cassia and olive oil ... an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary' (Exodus 3D, where God gives to Moses the constituents of a sacred oil.)
For the ancient Greeks oils and spices were highly valued. With an empire that stretched from the Nile to the Indus, these aromatic constituents became precious merchandise for ancient traders.
